Irked over the delay in opening of newly-constructed Railway Under Bridge (RUB) at Raipur Naka in Durg, the residents of the ward on Thursday staged a demonstration.
Meanwhile, the police initially tried to bring the agitating residents under control, but after its efforts failed and the agitators scuffled with the police, it had to resort to mild lathicharge. The residents under the leadership of District Planning Committee member Arun Singh and Hindu Yuva Manch Co-ordinator Govind Raj Naidu later registered their protest by giving their arrest.
It is worth mentioning that the Corporator of the Ward had given an ultimatum to the District and Police Administration to open the RUB till September 15. After the ultimatum ended on Thursday, large number of residents of the Ward reached the Raipur Naka RUB and demanded its immediate opening. They also shouted slogans against the administration and in order to avoid any untoward incident, large number of police personnel were deployed on the spot. After the agitators scuffled with the police, it had to resort to mild cane charging. Meanwhile after the residents still continued their protest, the police had to make arrests. Personnel from District Police Force, Government Railway Police as well as Railway Protection Force remained alert throughout the episode. Corporator Arun Singh alleged that though the RUB construction completed six months ago, it is yet to be opened for the common people. Due to it, the residents are forced to go through the over bridge after travelling a distance of around 2 kilometers. He said that since the administration failed to open the RUB within the given ultimatum, the residents were left with no other option except to launch the protest demonstration.
