Alleging the neglect by the authorities of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) towards the issues related to students, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Students Association (BASA) agitated at the gate of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule campus on Monday. BASA’s intensified agitation where they did not allow students and teachers to enter inside campus, compelled Vice Chancellor Dr Subhash Chaudhari to reach spot and assured them to fulfill their demands. BASA has put about 11 demands before the RTMNU administration including absence of basic amenities like drinking water, cleanliness, inadequate rooms.
Dr Pravin Abgad, President of BASA told ‘The Hitavada’, “ We were never adamant. In fact we kept meeting authorities for the last three months with a request to resolve the issues. Nobody paid attention to our demands. Whatever we asked were basic facilities. Everybody was aware that all students residing in upper hostel had to visit Bajaj Bhavan to get drinking water. Why authorities delayed such basic issues is a million dollar question and unpardonable. Had Vice Chancellor not come to meet us we could have taken stern step.”
The other demands included reduction in PhD registration fees, restarting the external courses, rise in stipend of Earn while Learn scheme, students should have open access to all the libraries of university and allowed to select book of their choice, gym should be started for the admitted students free of cost etc.
Earlier Registrar Dr Raju Hiwase and Dr Dharmesh Dhawankar, Public Relations Officer (Additional Charge) reached the spot where students were agitating and tried to convince students. But BASA insisted that unless V-C visits, they would not withdraw the agitation. Finally Dr Subhash Chaudhari reached the spot, talked to students and assured them to fulfill all the demands.
Dr Abgad said, “We are satisfied by the visit of the Vice Chancellor. We have also requested them to start bus service for the girl students from their hostel to the campus and Vice Chancellor agreed to provide the same.”
