To rein in negligent and rash drivers and curb incidents of overspeeding on flyovers, the Nagpur Police have decided to install speed-detecting cameras on the bridges. The idea is to instill deterrence of law among the rule violators who would be issued automatic challans based on data recorded by cameras. The action came in the aftermath of two horrific mishaps wherein riders on two-wheelers were tossed off the flyover after being hit by rashly driven four wheelers.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar confirmed the information and told ‘The Hitavada’ that the cameras would be installed to ensure that road users obey the speed limits on the flyovers. “The cameras would be connected with the Command and Control Centre and automatically generate challan,” he said.
There will be two types of cameras -- spot speed-detecting cameras and average speed-detecting cameras. The spot cameras will detect the speed of the vehicles at particular spots on the fly-overs. However, the average speed cameras will be installed at both ends of the flyovers. These cameras would detect the average speed of the vehicles on the flyovers. In case the drivers tend to violate the speed limit at any point of the fly-over, the act will be detected in the average cameras and help in identifying the vehicle involved.
Sources informed that a meeting of senior police officials and local administration would be held on Tuesday to discuss the issue of the safety measures on the flyovers. The officials are likely to introduce proposals including installation of safety nets on the parapet walls of the flyovers.
There are 31 flyovers and railway over-bridges under the jurisdiction of Nagpur police. In the past eight months, 13 persons were killed and 18 injured seriously in various accidents reported on flyovers in the city. According to traffic police, two persons were killed in two fatal accidents reported on Rajiv Gandhi flyover in East Nagpur this year. Mankapur, Sadar, Ramjhulla bridge reported one fatal accident each. Two persons were killed in two accidents reported on Dighori fly-over. The police have also recorded a fatal accident on a fly-over on Jabalpur-Hyderabad ring road. Recently, a woman was killed in an accident reported on Shaheed Gowari flyover and four persons lost their lives when a speeding car hit their motorcycle on Sakkardara fly-over.
