HCBA to felicitate CJI U U Lalit today

High Court Bar Association (HCBA), Nagpur, has organised a function to felicitate Justice Uday U Lalit, Chief Justice of India (CJI), on Saturday. Justice U U Lalit took charge as the CJI on August 27. This will be his first visit to the city after taking over as the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Bhushan R Gavai, Judge, Supreme Court of India, will be the chief guest for the function to be held at Dr Vasantrao Deshpande Hall in Civil Lines here at 6.30 pm. Justice Dipankar Datta, Chief Justice, Bombay High Court, and Justice Vikas S Sirpurkar, former Judge, Supreme Court of India, will be the guests of honour on this occasion.
Justice Sunil B Shukre and Justice Atul S Chandurkar, Judges, Bombay High Court; and Justice Bhushan P Dharmadhikari, former Chief Justice, Bombay High Court, shall also grace the occasion with their presence.
Born on November 9, 1957, the current CJI U U Lalit started his career as an Advocate enrolled in June 1983. His father U R Lalit was an Additional Judge at Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, and a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court. The CJI U U Lalit, as an Advocate, practised in the High Court of Bombay till December 1985. Later, he shifted to Delhi in January 1986. In April 2004, the Supreme Court designated him as Senior Advocate. He appeared as Amicus Curiae in many matters, and was appointed Special Public Prosecutor for Central Bureau of Investigation to conduct trial in all 2G matters under the orders of the Supreme Court. For two terms, he also served as Member of Supreme Court of India Legal Services Committee. On August 13, 2014, he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of India. On August 27 this year, he was elevated as the Chief Justice of India.
