The Psychiatry Department of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) finally got Post Graduation seats. This is for the first time that this department will offer admissions to PG seats. National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued Letter of Permission to IGGMCH with four PG seats. Psychiatry and Skin were the two departments in IGGMCH running sans PG seats. Now Psychiatry has got PG seats and according to sources, soon, Department of Skin too will get PG seats.
Dr Abhishek Somani, the Head of Department of Psychiatry at IGGMCH, who has been endeavoring to get PG seats, told ‘The Hitavada’, “It has been a long awaited cherished outcome of a process which began in 2018. I am thankful to all including the administration, seniors, colleagues and mentors for helping me successfully reach this milestone.”
At this juncture, the Psychiatry Department at IGGMCH has Dr Abhishek Somani as Professor and Head, two Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor, one senior Resident plus one ward of 30 beds. It clearly fulfills the condition of 4 PG seats. In fact, the department expects two more PG seats as NMC allots two PG seats against one Associate Professor. It has two Associate Professors.
In the year 2018, the then Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan had decided to bring PG course in Psychiatry in all the GMCs. The reason, he cited, was increasing number of patients suffering from various mental disorders treated by less number of mental health specialists.
The Government had decided to upgrade the departments in the GMCs where the facilities are lacking. At some places, arrangement like tie-up could be made. For example, Regional Mental Hospital and IGGMCH had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) where teaching staff was to be provided by IGGMCH, while Mental Hospital was to give infrastructure and other staff. It was basically the idea of Dr Prakash Wakode, the then Dean of IGGMCH. Through the tie-up, it was supposed to get two wards of Mental Hospital with 30 beds each attached to it. It could have fulfilled the bed condition. This will improve mental health services in this region. The MoU was to help IGGMCH in raising its number of beds. For starting PG in Psychiatry, the college has to fulfill certain conditions. They include - there should be a ward of 30 beds, there should be post of Professor and the GMC must have certificate of essentiality. The inspection by assessors appointed by NMC was done in April. No major deficiencies were noted and subsequently, permission to start PG was granted by NMC.
