A large number of devotees visit the Ganesh temple founded by late Raghuji Raje Bhosale in Akot. It is believed to be built by the King in 1751. Although the Ganesh temple was reconstructed later on, the Lord Ganesha idol kept in the temple is the same that was installed by Raghuji Raje Bhosale.
It is said that Raghuji Raje Bhosale had visited to Akot in 1751 for tax recovery. The then Berar region was under control of Bhosale. He used to visit there for recovery of revenue every year. The office of Bhosale was situated in Somvar Ves area on the bank of Khai river at that time. A shelter was also constructed there for elephants and horses that were in service of his military.
In 1751, when Bhosale was in Akot, Nizam suddenly attacked his army. As Bhosale was not in a position to fight against Nizam because of sudden attack, Bhosale rushed to elephants’ shelter to save his life, it is believed. That was the day of ‘Sankashti Chaturthi’. Raghuji Raje Bhosale felt that Lord Ganesha helped him to save life, hence he founded Ganesh temple there. The Ganesh idol is made from black stone. The idol has four arms and trunk is directed towards right, that is a rare one.
Earlier, the devotees used to apply ‘shendur’ on the idol, but nowadays it can be seen in its original form.
Devotees believe that it is the temple where their wishes come true. Devotees visited the temple every ‘chaturthi’ and ‘Ganesh jayanti’. At present the reconstruction and development of temple premises is in progress with the contribution of funds by devotees.
