The Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy (VDL), popularly known as Skin, at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) also has got Post Graduate (PG) seats. It was the last department in IGGMCH that was awaiting nod for PG seats since long.
At IGGMCH, two departments -- Psychiatry and Skin -- were awaiting PG seats. Two days ago, Department of Psychiatry got 4 PG seats and on Wednesday, Skin Department got 3 PG seats. It will largely benefit the poor students of the region who can’t afford pursuing higher education in private sector. With this, poor patients would get quality treatment and doctors also would be benefited as their workload would be balanced.
Under the guidance of Dean of IGGMCH Dr Lina Abhichandani, Head of the Department Dr Dharmendra Mishra endeavored to get PG seats for the department.
Coincidentally, Dr Mishra is a student of Dr Abhichandani when the former was pursuing MBBS at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). “While moving the proposals and getting sanctioned certain things, Madam supported me a lot,” said Dr Mishra who got exhilarated following the latest development.
In fact, the team of National Medical Commission (NMC) that visited IGGMCH for inspection last month, somehow, thought that the department was deficient in Microbiology, cytopathology, CT Scan, MRI.
On Tuesday, IGGMCH got the letter from NMC showing deficiency wherein the authority asked the institute to submit the compliance by 6 pm. Dean immediately sent the same, on the basis of which Skin Department got the nod to admit three students for PG from the academic year 2022-2023.
The requirement for three PG seats to Skin Department was one Professor, one Associate Professor, one Lecturer and one Senior Resident. IGGMCH has fulfilled the condition plus it has three Junior Residents too.
With inclusion of PG seats, quality of treatment provided at IGGMCH will get improved. People can not afford hair transplant at private hospitals, now it will be available at IGGMCH since the HoD Dr Mishra has done fellowship in Hair Transplant.
“Now, the working hands will be increased and we can provide specialised treatment to patients. We have laser treatment facility which can be rendered to the needy patients. Through PUVA therapy (Psoralen + ultraviolet light A) diseases like vitiligo, psoriasis can be treated. Right now 200-250 patients attend Outpatient Department (OPD) exclusively of Skin daily. With PG seats’ addition the number of patients getting attended will also increase. Many patients come with a complaint of Pemphigus. They go through lot of sufferings. Now the department can provide them the proper treatment,” said Dr Mishra.
Pemphigus is an autoimmune disorder. In routine process our system creates antibodies. These antibodies fight against harmful viruses and help us in recovering. On the contrary in pemphigus, our own antibodies damage our own cells
of skin and mucous membranes resulting in our
sufferings.
