Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), became the first to start Doctor of Medicine (DM) course in Interventional Radiology, among all the Government Medical Colleges in Maharashtra. DM is considered as the superspeciality course. The people working in Interventional Radiology endeavored to get this course to GMCH.
National Medical Council (NMC), in its Letter of Intent, made it clear that permission has been granted to GMCH to admit students for DM (Interventional Radiology) at GMCH from 2022-23 academic year.
NMC has given approval for 2 DM seats and it has also said, “The Commission has decided to obtain undertaking/essential document for issue of Letter of Permission for starting of new course DM (Interventional Radiology) with annual intake of 2 seats for the academic year 2022-23. The authorities need to fill the post of Professors within 3 months.”
The proposal of elevating the present head of the department Dr Jawahar Rathod has been forwarded to Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) and the approval is awaited.
‘The Hitavada’ talked to Girish Mahajan, Minister of Medical Education who said, “This is a very positive development and I always want it to take place. We will be giving approval to the proposal. Since Dr Rathod has been serving and taken lot of efforts we want him to be there. We will try to issue approval to his professorship within time so that GMCH can send the undertaking to NMC.”
The requirement for getting DM is one Professor, one Associate Professor, one Assistant Professor and one Senior Resident. GMCH fulfills all the requirements except the post of Professor which is under process.
The department has all the facilities including infrastructure, cathlab, CT Scan, Ultra Sonography, MRI etc. Every month the department performs 100-110 procedures in Interventional Radiology department itself.

MD students can get admission to DM here only. This will improve the treatment facility benefiting the patients.
It was all started during the tenure of Dr Sajal Mitra, the then Dean who moved the proposal and got sanctioned the required amount to be given to NMC. To get DM, certain facilities were to be set up which was done during Dr Mitra. When Dr Sudhir Gupta took over as Dean, he gave momentum to the process and finally NMC gave nod to DM course. Dr Jawahar Rathod attributed the achievement to Minister Girish Mahajan, Secretary Saurabh Vijay, Commissioner Virendra Singh, Director Dr Dilip Mhaisekar, Dean Dr Sudhir Gupta.
