Villagers stage ‘Chakkajam’ over industrial pollution

Infuriated over the pollution caused due to industries situated in their area, the villagers of Rasmada at Durg on Thursday morning staged ‘Chakkajam’ in the village.
Owing to their protest demonstration, the interior road leading towards the Durg bypass remained blocked for few hours while after the intervention of the authorities concerned, the villagers called off their agitation.
Anjora Police Outpost In-charge Sub-Inspector (SI) Pavan Devangan said that the agitating villagers were pacified soon and he also categorically denied the reports of police resorting to mild lathi-charge on the protestors.
It is worth mentioning that several industries are functional in industrial area at Rasmada situated some 10 kilometres away from Durg city and the villagers here are irked with the smoke emitting from the chimneys of these industrial houses. They have been demanding for resolving the issue of pollution being faced by them since long and the issue was even recently raised in the general body meeting of the Jila Panchayat, Durg. On Thursday, the villagers led by Sarpanch Mamta Sahu and Janpad member Ajay Vaishnav staged ‘Chakkajam’ at about 8:30 AM in the morning. Sources said that the police soon intervened and after the officials from District Industries Centre as well as police teams reached the spot, the villagers called off their agitation. SI Devangan said that the villagers have been convinced and they called off their agitation after few hours of protest.
