On the last day of registration of voters for Senate polls of Graduates category of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), the office received 71,568 Form B. This could be the highest number in last six terms. The voting is scheduled on March 19. As per the statistics available, the voters’ registration in 1989 was 12,696, in 1994 it was 17,872, in 2000 it was 14,945, 2005- 22 it was 378, 2010-19 it was 229 and in 2017 the voters registration had reached 18,902. According to ex-Senate member Mahendra Nimbarte, the present registration is much higher but it might reduced to around 65,000 after scrutiny.
According to Nimbarte, the number has gone up because some people’s registrations were done twice or thrice. In the scrutiny it would be revealed, added Nimbarte. After corrections, the final list of voters would be announced on February 16. This year, the Graduates’ category polls of Senate of RTMNU got delayed. One of the reasons was suspension of Adv Manmohan Bajpai, senior Senate member. After moving the court, he got the ruling in his favour. The court stated that the right to take any disciplinary action rests with Governor of State who is also the Chancellor of universities.
Graduate category has 10 seats. As per the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016 all members are the elected ones. The candidates have to submit nomination papers on February 25 till 5 pm. The scrutiny will be conducted next day -- February 26. The candidates can withdraw their nominations by March 6. The polling will be conducted at 94 centres on March 19. The procedure of counting of votes will begin on March 21 from 10 am at RTMNU’s Jamnalal Bajaj Bhavan administrative building.
