Curry leaves, Buransh to cure ‘diabesity’, says Prof Jachak

‘Diabesity’ is a new medical term used for obese and diabetic person. The number of persons ailing from diabesity is increasing rapidly across the globe. As traditional allopathic medicines are showing side-effects for diabetic, Indian researchers are working hard to make an absolute medicine from two Indian plants for effective treatment of diabesity. Curry leaves (Kadipatta) and Buransh (Himalayan plant) are the two plants on which researchers from National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali, are working hard for years. “Our trials are successful and the medicine will hit markets by the end of 2023,” said Prof Sanjay Jachak, Head of Department of Natural Products at NIPER, Mohali, on Saturday. He is in city to attend the 72nd Indian Pharmaceutical Congress. “The phytochemicals derived from the plants would be used to treat the patients suffering from diabesity,” Prof Jachak revealed while talking to ‘The Hitavada’. It will be an effective medicine for the patients, he claimed.

Prof Jachak further said, “Research on medicine for dengue and fever is in the final stages and it will be released in the market soon.” Integration of traditional medicine and modern therapy with an innovative approach is the basis of research techniques adopted by NIPER. The Indian herbal medicine is very effective, but the formula is complex as it is a mixture of several medicines. The NIPER scholars are conducting research to understand the mechanism of action of these medicines, he stated. Informing about immune booster tea, Prof Jachak said that, the herbal tea was made after proper research on herbal plants. The tea was made of Ashwagandha, Mulethi, Giloy, Tulsi and green tea.

The immune boosting capability of the tea was well-proven during the preclinical studies, he claimed. After getting a commercial partner, the tea would be made available in the market, he added. Stating the ‘blockbuster’ drug will definitely happen from the Ayush medicine, Prof Jachak stated, Ayurveda is our wealth, which we had not preserved and studied scientifically. Ayurvedic medicine will dominate the medicine market in the future, he claimed. There are seven NIPERs in India and the institutes are known as IITs of pharmacy. Prof Jachak is a native of Nashik, Maharashtra. He joined NIPER Mohali in 1999.
