A teenage girl took her own life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in Shastri Nagar area of Nandanvan Police Station after she was reprimanded by parents for spending excessive time on mobile phone. The deceased was identified as Khushi Dilip Panekar (17), a resident of Lane No 2, Shastri Nagar. According to police, Khushi, a Class 12 student, faced reprimands from her parents for spending excessive time on her mobile phone rather than focusing on studies. The parents, who work at a private institution, had repeatedly urged Khushi to focus on her studies instead of spending time on cellphone.
The police said that tensions escalated as Khushi resumed her mobile activities upon waking on Friday morning. Her parents scolded her before leaving for work. Khushi and her younger brother were at home. Around 10 am, Khushi asked her brother to play outside. When she was alone, she hanged herself using a blanket by tying it to the ceiling fan. When her brother returned, he found the door locked. Despite his repeated calls, Khushi did not respond. He sought help from neighbours, who discovered Khushi dangling from the ceiling fan. They rushed her to a hospital where the doctors declared Khushi dead. A case of accidental death was registered by Nandanvan police.
