THE hockey team of Principal Accountant General (PAG) Nagpur (Maharashtra) emerged winners of the IA&AD West Zone Championship which concluded on Thursday at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The tournament was organised by The Office of The Principal Accountant General (A&E) Rajasthan (Jaipur). The PAG team also qualified for All India competition which will be held from March 28 at at Chandigarh. In the summit clash, Roshan-led Nagpur team thrashed PAG Gwalior by three goals to nil in what could be termed as a one-sided encounter. Like in the semi-finals, PAG Nagpur played a goalless first quarter and gauged the strength of their opponents. Nagpur then changed the gears and scored a goal each in the remaining three quarters to emerge winners.
It was a double strike from Tiras K which helped Nagpur clinch the title. Tiras first converted a penalty corner in the 19th minute to put Nagpur ahead. In the second quarter, Ravins Jaiswal converted another penalty corner to double the lead. Two minutes into the last quarter (47th), Tiras once again sounded the board off a powerful reverse hit from the top of the circle to make it 3-0. The score remained unchanged at final hooter.
Avesh Ansari was named man of the series while Parvez Qureshi was declared goalkeeper of the tournament.
