Amravati Zone emerged winners in the MOIL-MSLTA Inter-Zone Tennis Tournament that concluded at the Gondwana Club tennis courts on Sunday. The round robin format which was in play with all six zones kept the teams on their toes literally, with a neck to neck fight among the top three zones. Amravati Zone emerged winners with 104 points and this was a reward for their planning, team formation and rigorous practice under the mentorship of Shiv Om Mor, MSLTA Council Member from Yavatmal. Team captain Sanjay Chandwani led from the front and guided the team to bring out their best to beat the strong opposition from Marathwada and Solapur Zones. Marathwada Zone, with 95 points, were runners-up while Solapur, with 92 points, finished third. The afternoon session looked impossible at around 1 pm when suddenly the clouds opened up and it poured for almost half an hour. But thanks to the fantastic ground staff at Gondwana Club and MSLTA Ramnagar, the courts were cleared of the water and made ready in time. The matches ended at 6.30 pm as per schedule.
In the presentation function that followed, Tournament Director Dr Sudhir Bhiwapurkar expressed his sincere thanks to MSLTA for giving Nagpur Zone the opportunity to host the tournament. The dignitaries also seated on the dais were Jatin Kale, Executive Committee Member, Gondwana Club; Rajiv Desai, Sheetal Bhonsale, both Joint Secretaries, MSLTA; Shiv Om Mor and Aly Panjwani, both Council Members MSLTA. Tournament Co-ordinator Vijay Naidu conducted the function. Vikram Naidu, Joint Secretary, NDHTA announced the results. Chandwani received the prize money of Rs fifteen thousand only whereas captain of Marathwada Zone Harjeender Singh collected the prize money of Rs ten thousand.
The two teams that qualified to play the grand finale at Panchgani this month end are: Amravati Zone — Ravi Jaiswal & Rajesh Mandade (Open doubles 30+), Sanjay Chandwani & Rahul Sharma (90+), Ravi Nagarkar & Jimmy Timbadiya (100+), Anuj Shah & Navin Patel (110+). Rest of Maharashtra team — Akram Khan & Mirza Masood (Marathwada 110+), Virendra Atnoor & Santosh Total (Solapur 100+), Harjeender Singh & Vijay Meher (Marathwada 90+), and Yugandhar Patil & Amit Ranjani (Kolhapur Open 30+). Tournament Referee Vishal Landge conducted the tournament with support of Sandip Nannaware and team of chair umpires and ball boys. MOIL Limited supported the tournament as a co-sponsor.
