THE dance of death on city flyovers continues unabated. One more horrific mishap on Thursday late night has added another dark chapter to the already gory story. This time, a woman and her son were thrown off the Sadar flyover and killed instantaneously after falling on Katol Road near State Bank of India’s (SBI) Chhaoni Branch when a car driven at a high speed collided with them. After the mishap, the driver of the ‘killer’ car sped away fearing arrest. The deceased, Yogeshshree Krishnanand Atram (30) and her son Alok (11) were residents of Gond Mohalla, Bhandewadi. Yogeshshree’s husband Krishnanand Awadhoot Atram (40), too, was seriously injured in the hit-n-run mishap.

Krishnanand Atram, his wife Yogeshshree and son Alok were returning home on a TVS Jupiter variomatic scooter (MH-49/BL-9957) from their relative’s house at Surendragad in Gittikhadan area a few minutes before midnight. Yogeshshree and Alok were riding pillion on the scooter. Two of their relatives, who were on another two-wheeler, were following them. Near SBI’s Chhaoni Branch on the Sadar flyover, a speeding rashly-driven white coloured car collided with Krishnanand’s scooter. The impact of the collision was so intense that Yogeshshree and her son Alok, riding pillion, were flung in the air and fell off the flyover from a height of about 60-70 ft. Krishnanand also suffered serious injuries.

Vehicular traffic on the flyover and near SBI on Katol Road came to a grinding halt. People gathered on the Katol Road where the bodies of Yogeshree and Alok were lying. Staff from Sadar Police Station arrived and rushed injured Krishnanand to Mayo Hospital. Bodies of his wife and son were also sent to the same hospital for autopsy.

Relatives of the deceased told police, Yogeshree and Alok were tossed into the air when the speeding car collided with their scooter and fell on the road beneath the flyover. They informed the investigators that the tragedy occurred when they were returning home after attending a function at the residence of deceased Alok’s grandfather in Surendragad. Sadar Police, after recording injured Krishnanand, registered a case under Sections 279, 337, 338, 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code, read with Sections 134, 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act, and launched a manhunt for the car driver.

Police sources informed that more than 21 persons were killed and 55 injured, a majority of them seriously, in different accidents on flyovers in the recent past. Overtaking, overtaking from the wrong side, overspeeding, using cellphones while driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and plying of heavy vehicles appear to be main reasons behind such ghastly mishaps on flyovers, they added.
