Under the animal exchange programme, the Maharajbag Zoo will get 10 black bucks and three four-horned antelope (Chousingha) from Kanan Pendari Zoological Garden, Bilaspur soon. Maharajbag zoo, which already has one male Chousingha, will get one more male and two female Chousinghas from Bilaspur Zoo. The Maharajbag Zoo lost had lost all of its black bucks in September 23 heavy rains and flood last year. The rain water entered the enclosure of black buck in the zoo, due to which all the herbivores drowned in the flood. Till then, the management of Maharajbag Zoo was in contact with Bilaspur Zoo for the transfer of 10 black bucks.

 

The Nagpur based zoo first got permission from Bilaspur Zoo and now, it has also got the green signal from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) for transfer of animals. The permission from CZA is mandatory for transfer of animals from one zoo to another. It is the second such big transfer of animals that is taking place in Maharajbag Zoo in the last 13 months. In February last year, Maharajbag zoo received three pairs of Hog Deer and two Peahens from the same Bilaspur Zoo. In exchange, Maharajbag zoo sent a leopard to Bilaspur Zoo last year.
