Heavy unseasonal rain with thunderstorm lashed city on Tuesday night, causing inconvenience to commuters as water logging on city roads slowed down traffic movement in many parts. India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued ‘Orange Alert’ for entire Vidarbha on April 9 and 10 and ‘Yellow Alert’ for April 11 to 13. The Weather Department predicted light to moderate rains in one or two places of Vidarbha in the next 48 hours whereas hailstorm, thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) very likely to occur at most of the parts of Vidarbha including Nagpur for the next 3-4 days. Along with Vidarbha, the Weather Department has also issued ‘Orange Alert’ for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh for April 9 and 10.

Nagpur witnessed light rains in the wee hours of Tuesday as the city recorded 5.6 mm rainfall before 8 am. Partly cloudy weather reduced the maximum temperature as the day temperature of Nagpur was 34.5 degrees Celsius. According to IMD, a cyclonic circulation lies over central parts of Madhya Maharashtra and a trough/wind discontinuity runs from north Gujarat to south Tamil Nadu in lower tropospheric levels. Under its influence, scattered light or moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (30-50 kmph) are very likely over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and isolated to scattered over West Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra during April 9 to 13. Along with Nagpur, in last 24 hours, Wardha recorded highest, 28.8 mm, rainfall whereas Bramhapuri witnessed 10 mm rainfall, Amravati 4.6 mm, Buldhana 2 mm, and Akola 2 mm. Due to cloudy weather, light rains and thunderstorm, the maximum temperature has reduced all over Vidarbha in the last 2-3 days.

On Tuesday, Akola recorded the highest maximum temperature with 38.3 degrees Celsius followed by Yavatmal 37.7 degrees Celsius, and Buldhana 37.4 degrees Celsius. Other parts of Vidarbha recorded the maximum temperature below 36 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. According to a meteorologist, the current weather activity that is going on is common in this season but it just delayed by a month. Normally, the hailstorm and thunderstorm take place during February end and beginning of March, however, this year it is happening in April. The maximum temperature will start increasing from next week. The presence of moisture in the atmosphere is causing rains, which has reduced the maximum temperature this summer season.
