Apathetic polling turnout in urban areas is still a matter of serious concern for the Election Commission and District Authorities. Urban dwellers very well understood that voting is the fundamental right of citizens but their lacklustre exercise in polls reflects the belief of some of the educated persons towards democracy. The polling percentage of previous elections proved that rural dwellers always superseded the residents of urban constituencies in terms of using their democratic right of polling in General Election – 2019. Four rural assembly constituencies registered ever highest polling turnout of 73.19 percent against the polling in four urban constituencies 65.61 percent in previous general election. Total polling of in Jabalpur Parliamentary Constituency was 69.43 percent in 2019. Record figure of polling in rural constituencies reflects that residents of urban areas are yet to come forward to strengthen democracy by casting their votes.

Figures of previous elections proved that the voters in urban areas are less concerned for electing best candidates for their representation in the Parliament. It may be noted that under the direction of the Election Commission of India, District Administration spent a big budget to encourage residents for polling by organising several voters’ awareness programmes under the head of Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Programme (SVEEP). Even after conducting a rigorous voters’ awareness campaign residents of urban assembly constituencies are yet to turn-up for using their voting right to strengthen the democracy and electing their best representative.

Surprising is the fact that residents in one of the densely populated and developed constituencies named Jabalpur East situated at heart centre of the district have registered lowest polling turnout of only 62.93 percent. Residents of two other urban constituencies include Jabalpur West and Jabalpur Cantt, which have majority of posh areas of the city, registered polling percentage of only 65.24 percent and 65.63 percent in year 2019. Besides this, Jabalpur North constituency is known for central market place had polling turnout of only 68.67 percent in General Election - 2019.
