THE Bharatiya Janata Party has denied renomination to its two-term sitting MP Poonam Mahajan from the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency and fielded prominent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam -- who served as the Special Public Prosecutor in several high-profile cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks -- from the seat. With Nikam’s nomination, the suspense is finally over the BJP’s candidature for the high-profile seat, including those of sitting MP Mahajan, Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar, singer Anuradha Paudwal, and actress Madhuri Dixit. Nikam is pitted against Congress nominee Varsha Gaikwad, whose nomination was announced on Thursday. In his first reaction, Nikam said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his colleagues must be credited for India’s elevated global status. Speaking to reporters, Nikam said the law is the key support for the poor and weak. “With this view, I joined BJP as I feel the security and sovereignty of the country should remain unaffected”. Mahajan, the daughter of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, was elected from the constituency in 2014 and 2019. She is also a former president of the BJP’s youth wing. Party leaders have claimed that the decision to drop her was based on organisational feedback, while some sources claimed the BJP dropped Mahajan due to an adverse poll survey on her winning prospects. Though indications had been there for some time that Mahajan would be dropped, it was the party’s search for her replacement that took time, sources said.

Meanwhile, Nikam said he would speak to Poonam Mahajan as he has known her since the days of the Pramod Mahajan (murder) trial. “I used to meet her that time, I know her,” he added. Speaking on his poll strategy, Nikam said he never underestimated his rivals in the courtroom and will neither do so in the poll arena. “Varsha Gaikwad is a seasoned politician,” he added. By nominating Nikam, the party has put up a new face from the seat who represents the ‘Marathi Manoos’. Marathi-speaking people consist 38 per cent of the population in the Mumbai North Central region, followed by 22 per cent Muslims, and 18-20 per cent people from North India, among others. Incidentally, Nikam was also the prosecutor in the murder case of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, Poonam’s father who was shot dead by his younger brother Pravin in April 2006. Former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray, who resides in Bandra East, has already announced that he will vote for Gaikwad.

North Central Mumbai comprises Vile Parle (BJP), Bandra West (BJP), Bandra East (Congress), Kalina (Shiv Sena-UBT), Chandivali (Shiv Sena), and Kurla (SC seat, Shiv Sena) Assembly segments. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Mahajan polled 4,86,672 votes (53.97 per cent) to defeat Congress nominee Priya Dutt, who got 3,56,667 votes (39.55 per cent). In 2014, Mahajan, who entered the poll fray for the first time, had got 4,78,535 votes (56.61 per cent) against Congress’ Priya Dutt, who managed 2,91,764 votes (34.52 per cent). The State, with its 48 Lok Sabha seats, is the second-largest contributor to the Lower House of Parliament after Uttar Pradesh. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 23 out of 25 contested seats, while the undivided Shiv Sena secured 18 out of 23 seats. The undivided NCP, part of the Opposition alliance, contested 19 seats and won four. Following the split in the Shiva Sena 2022, Eknath Shinde faction aligned with the BJP. Mumbai North-Central will go to poll on May 20.
