In order to treat the polluted water of Shankar nullah and Pulgaon nullah which directly gets mixed into the Sheonath River, the Durg Municipal Corporation (DMC) has come up with a proposal for setting up two Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Pulgaon and Urla. The DMC has even identified lands in different places for setting up of STPs and the proposal is now awaiting Centre’s nod. DMC has planned that the STPs which will be constructed under AMRUT 2 at a cost of around Rs 147.93 crore will treat polluted water which will be further sold to farmers and industries while it is also mulling on operating both the STPs with solar energy.

Talking to ‘The Hitavada’, municipal Commissioner Lokesh Chandrakar said that for stopping the polluted water from getting mixed into Sheonath River, they have identified lands in Urla and Pulgaon for setting up STPs under AMRUT 2. “Presently, the polluted water from Pulgaon and Shankar nullah is drained into Sheonath River and we have made a proposal to construct two STPs for treating the polluted water of both the nullah. A proposal in this regard has been sent to the government and the work for STPs will begin once we receive the approval,” said Commissioner Chandrakar.

On being asked that whether the DMC is also planning to power both the STPs with Solar energy, he said that it is also a part of the plan and either the DMC will use the treated water from nullah in its gardens or other works or sell the same to farmers and industrial units. It is worth mentioning that the National Green Tribunal had issued directives for treating the polluted water before mixing it into rivers and following the same, the DMC is planning two set up two STPs in Pulgaon near the in-take well and Khasra Number94 at Urla. After the allotment of lands for the same purpose, the demarcation of the lands will be carried out and the STPs will be having a capacity of 24 MLD and 47 MLD, confirmed DMC sources.
