Dr Rakesh Kumar, the former Director of CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), Nagpur has been suspended from service, three days before his superannuation ecently. Dr Kumar was accused of serious charges related to funding research which was never carried out and appointing his relatives and friends in various departments. His superannuation was due on March 31, and his suspension order was released on March 27. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has divested Dr Rakesh Kumar from the post of NEERI Director and transferred him to its headquarters in Delhi. Sources said that this was after the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) ordered an inquiry into allegations of corruption against Dr Kumar and other employees, at the institute. The allegations were levelled by a former employee of NEERI.
 
After his suspension, Dr Kumar has moved the Central Administration Tribunal (CAT) to challenge the suspension order. Besides Dr Kumar, eight to nine other scientists were also under the scanner, for their involvement in the scandal. The CSIR authorities collected information related to the complaints received against him. Dr Rakesh Kumar was also accused of payments to some fake companies or companies in the name of his relatives. The enquiry against him is going on. Although the details of alleged corruption and other details are known only to the CSIR authorities.
