In a bid to enhance patient care and treatment efficiency, Kasturba Hospital in Bhopal BHEL area is gearing up for a significant upgrade of its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency facilities. The administration of the hospital in a conversation with ‘The Hitavada’ shared plans to shift these crucial departments to a new building, equipped with modern amenities and state-of-the-art technology. Dr Arpana Tiwari, the Chief Medical Services (CMS) of Kasturba Hospital, shed light on the rationale behind the move, emphasising the limitations posed by the previous infrastructure. “In the old building, there was limited scope for the development of ICU facilities. However, with the transition to the new building, we now have ample space to expand and enhance our services,” stated Dr Tiwari. The upcoming shift to the new building promises a host of improvements for patients and medical staff alike. One notable upgrade includes the automation of ICU beds, allowing for remote control and real time monitoring, thereby facilitating streamlined patient care. Additionally, the ICU will witness an increase in bed capacity, from 14 to 16 beds, with the incorporation of four separate cabins for enhanced privacy and comfort. Dr Arpana Tiwari highlighted that the Central monitoring systems is being installed alongside patient beds, enabling attending doctors and nurses to swiftly assess vital signs and other crucial parameters through their console on their desks.

This real-time monitoring capability is expected to instill a sense of trust among patients and their families, as medical professionals will be in close proximity, closely monitoring their condition. Furthermore, the hospital administration has announced measures to ensure infection control and streamline treatment processes. Dr Tiwari shared that previously, full-time attendance by family members was permitted in the ICU, but now, strict limitations in visiting timing will be imposed to optimise patient care. Patients will be provided with gowns, and only one attendant will be allowed in the room at a time, equipped with appropriate protective gear. Simultaneously, plans are underway to revamp the Emergency or Casualty section, with a focus on optimising patient flow and accessibility. The new building will feature a separate entrance for the Emergency department, minimising unnecessary crowding and ensuring quick access to critical care services. Additionally, the Emergency section will witness an increase in bed capacity from 8 to 11, along with the provision of modern monitoring equipment and dedicated spaces for minor procedures.

Dr Tiwari further expressed, in addition to the upgrades in the ICU and Emergency departments, the new building will feature facilities such as a minor operating theatre (OT) and a dedicated plaster room. Addressing logistical challenges, the hospital administration has opted to separate the injection room from the Emergency Section, changing the current set up. This strategic decision aims to streamline patient flow and improve efficiency, particularly for individuals seeking standalone injections. Moreover, recognising the diverse needs of patients, the hospital will establish a designated Day Care room. This space will serve patients undergoing treatments such as chemotherapy, allowing them to rest and recuperate without disrupting the critical care services provided in the Emergency department. Acknowledging the complexity of the shifting process, BHEL PRO (Public Relations Officer) confirmed that the inauguration of the new Emergency section and ICU is scheduled for April 5. However, Dr. Arpana Tiwari emphasised the need for a strategic approach to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing patient treatments during the transition period. The hospital administration remains optimistic about completing the entire shifting process within the month of April.

In addition to the ICU and Emergency upgrades, Kasturba Hospital has undertaken initiatives to improve other departments. The Physiotherapy department has seen the repair of old machines and the introduction of new equipment to enhance treatment outcomes. Moreover, the Radiology X-Ray Department, facing frequent breakdowns due to outdated machinery which are being used since its establishment in 1964, will soon benefit from the installation of new X-Ray machines in the new building of the hospital, now just awaiting government (AERB-Atomic Energy Regulatory Board) licensing for operational commencement. Dr Tiwari added. The hospital administration shared, that they are ensuring comprehensive upgradation efforts at Kasturba Hospital to make sure its commitment in delivering high-quality healthcare services to the community. With a focus on modernisation and patient-centric care, the institution aims to set new standards in healthcare delivery and emerge as a beacon of excellence in the region.
