Dug-up roads

A LOT of litigations regarding lack of coordination among Government agencies especially related to road construction works are awaiting judgments in courts since long. After the construction of roads, Energy Department suddenly remembers it has to install new wiring, Nagpur Municipal Corporation recollects it has not laid the water or sewage pipeline. They start digging the roads again, damage them and then leave them to their fate. The road remains there carrying large potholes, shabby patchwork not suitable for any use. This has been going on since long. Nagpur again is witnessing the same. Works like this are underway all over the city and people are confused as to whom to approach. Recently, a person died on one of the roads in Bajaj Nagar because of this shabby work. If one takes stock of peaceful road near CP Club in Civil Lines or Central Bazar Road or the road from VNIT gate to LAD Square, one would realise how callously the civic authorities are working.

Work has recently been completed of laying of pipelines on the road that reaches Shraddhanand Square from VNIT. The contractor dug it, laid the pipelines and left the road in shabby condition, putting the debris right there. No vehicle can move on it and that road is currently functioning as one-way. People are using only the other side of the road. When the agency would take up the work of other part, after completion of which people won’t be able to use it. Similarly, right in front of girls hostel of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), the road has been dug and traffic movement is carried on one side only. Due to lack of coordination among the Government agencies, the traffic movement has been disrupted. Had the civic body contacted Traffic unit of city police, the road could have been closed for some time. During the previous Government led by Devendra Fadnavis in Maharashtra, a Transport Committee under the Chairmanship of Divisional Commissioner was formed. Nobody knows whether the committee discusses such issues or not. On the same road, the contractor has thrown the debris near the trunk of the trees resulting in their choking. It is to be notified that recently, Garden Superintendent of NMC had asked Engineering Section of all 10 zones to ensure proper space is left around trees so that they can breath properly. But who cares.

Area near CP Club, which is a prime locality where the bungalows of Judges, Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer, Additional Tribal Commissioner, Commissioner of Police, Municipal Commissioner and others are situated hasn’t been spared too. On Friday, the contractor dug-up the roadside, even chopped off some trees by running JCBs over them. After completing the specified work, the debris were left there in the form of huge pieces of road, rocks paver blocks at the venue making walking difficult on the roadside. A lot of such works are going on since long at Bajaj Nagar road near the wall of Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth. A large tin barricade has been put by authorities has made the road towards Bajaj Nagar Square a bit narrow. About two weeks ago, a person died in an accident after which the authority closed the meridian preventing vehicular movement. On Central Bazar Road between Bajaj Nagar Square and Kachipura Square, digging work is underway. People don’t have problem with the work as they are ready to cooperate. But they are afraid of the contractor leaving the work halfway. A lot of potholes are kept open after the so-called completion of the works.
