A major development has emerged in the case of Uday Gaiki, a B.Tech student who allegedly died after a brutal beating by police officers. One of the two constables accused in the case, Saurabh Arya, was arrested on Saturday and has been charged with murder. The search is currently on for the second accused, Santosh Bamnia, whom the police claim will be arrested soon. Police officials confirmed that a serious case has been registered against constables Saurabh Arya and Santosh Bamnia, both posted at the Piplani Police Station.

This action was based on witness statements, CCTV footage of the incident, and the preliminary post-mortem report, which provided prima facie evidence of the constables’ direct involvement in the student’s death. DCP Zone-2, Vivek Singh, stated that an investigation led by ASI Ajay Vajpayee revealed the incident occurred between 1:30 and 2:00 am on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday in the Indrapuri area.

The deceased, Uday Gaiki, was in a red car with his friends Akshay Garg, Rishabh Chansauria, and Deepesh Barkade. The group was allegedly drinking and playing loud music when patrolling police personnel began questioning them. CCTV Footage Confirms Beating: During the questioning,

Uday allegedly tried to flee the car, after which the constables gave chase. Subsequent CCTV footage clearly shows Constable Saurabh Arya chasing Uday and hitting him on the leg with a lathi (baton). Uday was later found unconscious by his friends and immediately rushed to the hospital. He was later declared dead at AIIMS Bhopal. Post-Mortem Report Confirms ‘Homicide’:

The preliminary post-mortem report confirmed the severity of the student’s injuries, citing the cause of death as ‘Traumatic Hemorrhagic Pancreatitis resulting from blunt force trauma’. Crucially, the report explicitly described the manner of death as homicide.

The murder case was registered against the constables only after these findings and the emergence of CCTV footage showing the beating, which immediately dismissed the police’s initial claim that the student had merely threatened them. In their defence, the accused constables had claimed that they apprehended the group for creating a disturbance late at night, and that minor force was used only after Uday fled and became abusive.

They also claimed Uday fell on his own while drunk, became aggressive, and even threatened to have them suspended. However, the official investigation has dismissed this claim, establishing that the student’s death was caused by injuries sustained during the altercation with the police personnel, leading to the direct charge of murder. The police are currently conducting raids to arrest the second absconding constable.
