Nagpur’s popular Sonegaon Lake is set for a major facelift, with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) preparing to launch a state-of-the-art smart lighting system aimed at improving safety and enhancing the lake’s night-time charm. Years of public complaints over poor visibility and safety hazards have led to decisive civic action. The upcoming project will see the installation of solar-powered and energy-efficient LED lights, including underwater lamps, motion-sensor pathways, and artistic light poles. Once completed, the lakefront is expected to become a secure and family-friendly destination after dark. According to NMC officials, a Project Management Consultant (PMC) has already been appointed to guide the planning and execution process. The project is anticipated to move to the implementation stage within the next three to four months.

A separate technical auditor will also be engaged to ensure top-quality design, electrical safety, and the use of durable materials. “This modern and eco-friendly system will not only address the long-standing complaints about darkness but also give the lake a fresh, aesthetic appeal,” said R U Rathod, Executive Engineer (Electrical), NMC. Smart automation features will allow remote control and energy-saving operation, while programmable LEDs will illuminate the lake in different hues for festive and civic occasions. Local residents have welcomed the development, calling it a long-overdue step that will transform Sonegaon Lake into a lively, secure, and beautifully lit urban landmark in keeping with Nagpur’s smart city goals.
