Working with Dr J P Modak as a research student was both a pleasure and a profound honour. Under his guidance, I learned the essentials of true research scholar—how to conduct a thorough literature survey, how to write research papers with clarity and conviction, and how to approach experimentation with discipline and curiosity. Before I began my research work, we documented the scope of the project in a forty-page notebook—a notebook I still cherish. By the end of the work, I realised that we had achieved far more than what we had originally outlined, and this was immensely satisfying. Prof Modak played a key role in securing a major consultancy project at GTPS Uran. It was a challenging assignment, and his decision to entrust me—at such a young age—with the responsibility of coordinating the project remains one of the greatest affirmations of my career.

Working with him during that time was rewarding in every sense. In 1989, as a young faculty member, I again had the privilege of working closely with him while organising IPRoMM-89, where he served as coordinator. Decades later, in 2016, we reunited to organise IPRoMM at VNIT, and inviting him to deliver the keynote address was a deeply fulfilling moment for me. I am also grateful to have played a role in organising his felicitation at VNIT upon his receiving the DSc (Engineering) degree from Nagpur University—an honour he richly deserved. Our association extended beyond academia.

We worked together in the Association for Machines and Mechanisms – Vidarbha Chapter, collaborating to promote the study of machines and mechanisms across the region. Over the years, our professional relationship grew into a warm and close family bond. He and his better half, Mrs Modak, attended all our major family functions; the two of them were truly made for each other. The hospitality and warmth of his wife are beyond what words can capture. One of the most touching moments of my life came when I became the Director of VNIT. Prof Modak visited my home with sweets to felicitate me, a gesture that moved me deeply. Later, when he visited my office, I insisted he sit with me on the sofa, but he gently refused. Instead, he asked me to sit in the Director’s chair and took my photograph. That moment continues to remain etched in my heart.

Professor Modak’s mentorship, affection, and unwavering faith shaped my journey in countless ways. Remembering him is both an honour and a privilege. A person like him is not just a mentor for the duration of a degree; he becomes a guiding presence throughout one’s life. Prof Modak’s influence, affection, and values will continue to inspire me forever. All the research scholars who had the privilege of receiving his guidance and mentorship must be carrying the same deep sense of gratitude and affection for him. More than a hundred scholars were shaped by his wisdom, and over two thousand students walked into their futures strengthened by his teachings. On behalf of every research scholar, every student, and every colleague whose life he touched, I offer my heartfelt homage. May his noble soul find eternal peace. (The author is ex-Director of VNIT)
