IN Aprompt and decisive action,
Jabalpur Police saved a couple
from becoming victims of a
sophisticated digital arrest fraud
and averted a major financial
loss, on Tuesday.
The incident was reported on
Tuesday, when the Cyber Cell
received information that a cou
ple was being threatened in pre
text of digital arrest.
Acting immediately on the
instructions of SP Upadhyay,
Additional SP (Crime) Jitendra
Singh and Sub-Inspector Neeraj
Singh Negi from the Cyber Cell
rushed to the spot.
During inquiry, it was revealed
that on December 6, at around
8 am, the couple had received
a call from a person posing as
an ATS officer.
The caller false
ly accused them of having links
with terrorist Afzal Khan and
claimed that their mobile SIM
was being used to leak confi
dential national information.
The fraudster forced them to
download a suspicious app, kept
them under surveillance via
video call and threatened them
with imprisonment for giving
false information. He warned
them not to inform anyone,
claiming they were under threat
from terrorists.
The caller extracted person
al details including family infor
mation, Aadhaar number,
mobile numbers, bank
accounts, fixed deposits and
mutual fund details.
He then
claimed that Rs 70 crore of mon
ey-laundering funds had been
routed through their account
and that they had received Rs
70 lakh as commission. He pres
sured them to visit the bank,
transfer money through RTGS,
break their fixed deposits and
send Rs 10 lakh from their
Demat account.
Additional SP (Crime)
Jitendra Singh reached the loca
tion promptly and intervened,
preventing the couple from
transferring any money. The Cyber Cell’s quick response
saved them from a major
financial loss. A probe into the
wider network behind this dig
ital arrest fraud has also been
initiated.
SP Jabalpur Shri Sampat
Upadhyay (IPS) has urged cit
izens not to trust unknown
callers, whether through reg
ular calls or WhatsApp, mak
ing suspicious inquiries or
issuing threats. People must
never share bank or personal
information over such calls.
In case of any suspicious
communication or online
fraud, citizens should imme

Helpline 1930 or report it to
the nearest police station.
It may be noted that under
the directives of

Cyber Cell has been continu

fraud. Through workshops,
media outreach and social plat
