IN A world racing toward newer, faster and sleeker machines, few vehicles possess the quiet power to make one pause and admire the true legacy of the Indian Army.
The 1957 Willy’s Jeep owned by Adv Anand Parchure is one such machine, which more than a vehicle, is an escape from his usual ‘black and white’ life.
A pioneer in popularising the Indian Army Jeep, the Willy’s Jeep in many ways is also the inspiration of current SUV segment in the nation. Anand upgraded his Jeep to the USA Military Yellow from its original Indian Military Green after purchasing it from its second owner in 1994. A testament to trust and simplicity, the Jeep is widely celebrated for its capabilities, which is an unfailing companion one can trust with life in extreme terrains.
“The powerful 1500cc engine in its compact body features a 4-cylinder overhead valve layout, which makes ample power to carry men and equipment across terrains with the greatest dependability,” Anand said.
Anand will be driving his prized possession at the Rotary–The Hitavada Vintage Car Rally on December 28 at St Ursula Ground.
The feeling of driving this vintage legacy on modern roads is best described by Anand himself. “In a profession as black and white as a lawyer, quite literally, one often craves the opportunity to chase an adventure. And what better way than taking a nice long drive in the Jeep, complete with the sharpest pair of Ray-Bans! Lo and behold, one is transported into a mountainous background with old Bollywood music and an olive-green sense of bravado.
“It is like a time capsule—a safe place to store your alter ego and a tangible piece of history all in one. Being the proud owner of this Jeep is a privilege and a thrill like no other,” he added.
While dependability has never been in question, maintenance too is far from a concern.
“Careful maintenance and service as per the manufacturer’s guidelines have helped me keep this Jeep in fully functional condition.”
Rugged and simple, the vehicle has long served as a workhorse for personal, commercial and military use, forging a deep cultural connection since its conception and bestowing upon its owners the responsibility to preserve these machines. “Any vehicle, whatever age, if maintained carefully, should give years of trouble-free service and will always be a joy to look at and drive,” he concluded.
