Raja Bhoj International Airport has finalised its preparations to handle potential low-visibility conditions (fog) anticipated during the upcoming winter season. A comprehensive Fog Management Dry Run was successfully conducted at the airport on Saturday, with active participation from all key stakeholders. The main objective of the exercise was to ensure safe, efficient, and co-ordinated operations among all agencies in case of flight delays, cancellations, or diversions due to fog.
All major stakeholders, including Air Traffic Control (ATC), CISF, Airport Operations, airlines, ground handling agencies, and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), reviewed their Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Leveraging CAT-II Capability: Airport management announced that Bhopal Airport is now fully operational with CAT-II capability, which allows flight operations even in conditions with a Runway Visual Range (RVR) of just 350 meters.
With this achievement, Bhopal Airport has become the third Airports Authority of India
(AAI) facility in the country to be equipped with CAT-II facilities. Management believes this advanced capability will strengthen the airport’s reliability in handling a large number of diverted flights during the winter period. Airport Director Ramji Awasthi emphasised the success of the exercise, stating, “Operationalising CAT-II capability is a testament to our commitment to safety. We are making every effort to ensure minimal inconvenience to passengers and maintain operational efficiency even in low-visibility conditions.
This dry run was a crucial step in that direction.”
Focus on Passenger Amenities: During the exercise, minor deficiencies related to passenger communication and terminal readiness were identified and rectified with immediate corrective measures. To enhance passenger facilities, a designated area near Boarding Gate
No. 5 within the Security Hold Area (SHA) has been reserved for stocking additional food and beverages, ready to serve passengers in case of long delays. Furthermore, co-ordination has been established with local taxi operators and cab aggregators to ensure the availability of ground transport during periods of disruption.
Airport management stated that the winter operations plan is designed with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, operational efficiency, and passenger convenience.
