Nagpur city has witnessed a noticeable rise in leopard sightings. What was once a rare event has now become a recurring headline. The latest incident took place in Ordnance Factory Ambajhari Estate (OFAJ), on Tuesday. Some residents of the Estate witnessed a leopard inside the OFAJ premise that raised panic among residents and employees of the defence establishment.
Taking swift action against the complaint received by OFAJ management, Transit Treatment Centre (TTC), Seminary Hills installed a cage and camera traps near the site.
“We got a call of leopard sighting inside the OFAJ premises.
Our team rushed to the spot and found pugmarks of the big cat. Soon we decided to install a
cage and camera traps,” said Kundan Hate, incharge, TTC to The Hitavada.
OFAJ estate is surrounded with forest like patches and bushes which are preferable to hide for leopards. Hate also informed that when the team inspected the site, they found broken boundary walls which are favourable for easy access for the wild animal.
“We advised OFAJ management to repair the broken boundary wall to restrict intrusion of leopards in the premises.
We also urged them to remove grasses which helps leopards to hide,” said Hate.
TTC teams also inspected Khapri Metro Station area in Khapri on Wednesday where some commuters noticed a leopard near the metro track on Wednesday morning. Whereas, the team found
no trace of any leopard
from there.
Similarly, TTC also visited Pardi area after receiving a call of leopard sighting on Tuesday night but again no sign of big cat found there.
The constant sightings are not just isolated incidents, they reflect a deeper, structural imbalance between human expansion and shrinking wildlife habitats.
