Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal has ordered the detention of notorious gangster and fraudster Sunny Santaram Gaikwad (25) under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act, 1981. Gaikwad, a resident of Kaikadi Nagar slums under the jurisdiction of Beltarodi Police Station, was sent to Nagpur Central Jail on Tuesday.
According to Beltarodi Police, Gaikwad was involved in many serious crimes, disturbing peace and safety. Even though earlier preventive actions were taken, including a previous MPDA detention in 2023, he continued with criminal activities after his release. Several cases have been registered against him at Beltarodi Police Station. His crimes include threatening people with guns, extortion, home invasions, physical assaults, property damage, criminal intimidation and carrying deadly weapons.
He has also violated externment orders and used abusive language in public.
In 2023, the Beltarodi Police took action CrPC. That year, he was also detained under the MPDA Act. But after his release, he resumed criminal acts. In 2024, he was again warned and asked to sign a bond for good behaviour for two years under Section 129 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Still, he continued with crimes such as house trespassing, extortion and assault.
Due to his growing threat to public safety, Senior Inspector Mukunda Kawade of Beltarodi Police Station sent a detailed proposal to the Crime Branch, which was later approved by the CP Dr Singal. As a result, Gaikwad has been detained again under the MPDA Act.
