BEYOND THE SIGNAL

By Vikas Vaidya :

COMMUTERS are facing a lot of problems due to presence of beggars at city squares. These beggars keep changing theirvenues. Earlier, they were operating atringroad. Now, they are operating on theentire stretch starting from Samvidhan Square to Panchsheel Square.Ithas become a menace and people are suffering from this problem. Though quick police action reduced the number of beggars, the menace has not stopped completely. These beggars are appearing in more numbers at Variety Square, Rani Jhansi Square and Panchsheel Square.

The above squares see heavy traffic flow throughout theday. People stop when signal is red and during the same time, these beggars approach them. They either demand money or food. Their way of begging is very much bizarre. They rap on the windows of the four-wheelers with their hands to attract the attention of drivers. Similarly, they stand close to the twowheeler riders and put forth their demands. On many occasions, they try to pamper the commutersbyofferingprayers. The time when the commuters stand at the signal is always a crucial. People are focussed on their signal getting green. These beggars stand in the middle of the traffic. When vehicles move after signal gets green, people find it difficult tonavigate.

Thevehicular movement gets slow as these beggars create hurdle and drivers have to drive vehicles carefully taking precaution of not hitting anybody. Variety Squareis the busiest one where traffic and pedestrians keep moving from all the directions. Unlike in other metropolitan cities, here in Nagpur, pedestrians keep walking in red signal as per theirwhims and fancies. There is market on main road, then on the road between Variety Square and Munje Square. Commuters have to be very alert at these two squares. During rush hours, this area witnesses very heavy traffic from all the directions. A lot of people keep walking towards their destinations without thinking whether their signal is on or not.Toadd to their woes beggars keep troubling. Authorities are taking action. But they are soonreleased and then they start their activities again.
