The women had come to perform Pind Daan, a ritual for deceased ancestors, at Pagartola village
Three women from Nagpur lost their lives after slipping and drowning while bathing in the Bagh River near Korni Ghat, close to Laitola Gram Panchayat in Gondia District. The incident took place around 1.30 pm on Sunday during a religious ritual.
The women had come to perform Pind Daan, a ritual for deceased ancestors, at Pagartola village. The deceased have been identified as Meenakshi Santosh Baghel (39), Neetu Shatrudhan Baghel (35), and Mirabai Ishulal Turkar (50), all residents of Nagpur.
According to the Rawanwadi Police, the Turkar family had recently suffered a loss when Mukesh Turkar passed away on May 30.
To perform the post-death ritual, the family and their close relatives gathered at Korni Ghat, located within the Rawanwadi Police jurisdiction, on Sunday afternoon.
After completing the pind daan, the group went down to the Bagh River for a ceremonial bath. While bathing, Neetu Baghel slipped on a rock and fell into the deeper part of the river. In an attempt to save her, Meenakshi Baghel and Mirabai Turkar also entered the water but sadly drowned as well.
Another woman who rushed to help also slipped into the river but was fortunately rescued in time by a male relative present at the scene.
As soon as the incident occurred, the Rawanwadi Police were informed. A large crowd gathered near the riverbank as police officials arrived. With the help of local villagers and relatives, the police retrieved the three bodies from the water.
The bodies were then taken to the KTS District General Hospital in Gondia for post-mortem examination.
Rawanwadi Police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the incident further. Police Inspector Vaibhav Pawar is overseeing the investigation.
