NAGPUR,
In a case similar to the story shown in the movie ‘Drishyam’, police found a woman’s skeleton buried at a fly-over construction site near Mhalgi Nagar Square. Officers believe someone killed her and tried to hide the body under the ground so that no one would find it for many years. A senior police official said the killer might have planned to bury the body in the pit so it would remain hidden for years without anyone noticing it. Construction of the fly-over is underway at Mhalgi Nagar Square and one end of the bridges is at Besa Power House Square. Near the square stands the Khedula Kunbi Samaj Bhavan. Just opposite, the construction company had dug a pit 20 feet deep and filled it with fly ash as part of the building process. The discovery was made on Friday around 7 pm, when a stray dog started digging at the site and pulled out a human skull. Alarmed workers immediately informed the site supervisor, who called Sakkardara Police.
Police Inspector Mukunda Thakre and his team reached the spot. The exhumation process began soon after and took about one and a half hours.
The skeleton was found buried just three feet below the surface, not at the full depth of the pit.
Initial observations showed that the body had decomposed almost completely, leaving only the skeleton. However, some tissue was still present and clothing items like a saree and bangles remained intact. This suggested that the burial had taken place within the last three months, during the ongoing bridge construction.
Earlier, some residents speculated that the body could have been buried in 2021–22 during the cement road work on the Ring Road. But police believe the presence of partially preserved remains points to a more recent burial.
The remains were found close to 20-foot fly ash pit but only 3 feet deep which indicated the burial was done hastily.
Police focus on missing persons: The immediate focus of the investigation is to identify the victim. Police are reviewing missing persons’ reports from various stations in the city, giving priority to recent cases involving missing women. They are also checking records of female workers who may have been employed at or near the construction site in recent months.
Post-mortem and skeletal analysis key to identification: A police officer said that the post-mortem report and skeletal analysis would be vital in identifying the victim.
“The post-mortem will help determine the cause and manner of death, while skeletal analysis can establish the victim’s age, sex, height, ancestry, and unique features like healed fractures or dental work,” the officer explained.
