The City Police have issued a notification and directed for a mandatory system of identification tags for all pet dogs. Such tags would carry the owner’s name and address, ensuring accountability and safety in public spaces. The notification was issued by the Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal, which stated that, dogs in public must wear a mouth-covering net to prevent biting. Similarly, each dog should have a tag with the owner’s name and address.

The owners are responsible for vaccinating and deworming their dogs and preventing any harm to others. The police have issued a strict public notice warning citizens not to feed stray dogs on roads or public places without permission and legal action will be taken against anyone found feeding dogs in unauthorised areas. This action comes after several complaints about stray dogs causing trouble to citizens, especially children and senior citizens, in many areas of the city. The notice has been issued under Section 44 of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, and aims to protect public safety and maintain law and order. This order is in effect from August 25, 2025.
