Vehicle boom shrinking space

‘The Hitavada’ has been focussing on city’s parking problem by citing examples, giving actual photos of parking mess and other connected issues related to vehicle parking. It’s a sincere drive and aims to bring such issues to the notice of authorities. Nagpur was a very tiny and beautiful city till recent past, but in last one decade, the number of all vehicles has gone up at tremendous speed. The number and size of roads is more or less the same. No new addition except some fly-overs. When one buys a scooter or car, he somehow manages to park it in his residential complex or own house. But when he moves out of his house, he is required to park it at public places only. But the space available is not sufficient to accommodate his vehicle.

This results in forced wrong parking. Again, the tendency is to go by own vehicles instead of using public transport. Leave aside the public places, the small lanes in localities see lot of cars parked on both sides of lanes. This problem is in most of the developing cities in India. The only solution appears to be proper parking, less use of vehicles, no new buying of vehicles unless it is very very badly needed, improve public transport system effectively, particularly, autorickshaws, taxies, buses. This will surely ease the parking problem to a great extent.
