Major General Sanjay Gautam assumed charge as the Chief of Staff of Headquarter Madhya Bharat Area. He took over the responsibilities from Major General PS Dahiya, who retired recently after an illustrious military career. The General Officer was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1993 and was commissioned into Mechanised Infantry. He is a highly experienced and decorated military officer with a distinguished service record across various operational, staff and instructional appointments. During his service, the General Officer played a key role in Operation Rakshak and Operation Rhino. Major General Sanjay Gautam has commanded a Mechanised Infantry Regiment of the Indian Army as Commanding Officer from July 2010 to September 2012 and as Brigade Commander of an Independent Armoured Brigade from June 2020 to November 2021.
 
He has obtained a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College in 2024. He is also an alumnus of prestigious Defence Services Staff College and has served as an instructor at OTA Chennai and MAC Wing, Ahmednagar. Apart from this, he has also held several important appointments at Army Headquarters and has been a part of military planning for many military operations which includes important appointments as ADG Mechanised Infantry and CD Directorate. While assuming charge of Chief of Staff in the oldest Headquarter Madhya Bharat Area he is expected to bring an experienced and skilled leadership approach in displaying a strategic blend of expertise and experience in enhancing the country’s defence capabilities in critical border areas. Lieutenant General PS Shekhawat, General Officer Commanding Madhya Bharat Area congratulated Major General Sanjay Gautam on assuming charge as Chief of Staff and expressed commitment to uphold the rich traditions and operation excellence of Madhya Bharat Area.
