Q. I have a lot of problems going on. My family, especially my mother is very unsupportive. I have opted for a job in desperation now which is good but not of my interest. I am confused regarding my career decision. I have a lot of dreams. I want to do something which I love. My family is content with me earning and have no interest in what I want to do. I can’t complain. I feel like running away. I feel suffocated here. I remember the college days which were better. I am stuck. What should I do to know what my career aim in life is?

Will career counselling help? Ans: Yes, you should come for career counselling as job satisfaction is very important for happiness in life. In bad times it is important to get a job but if you are in a position to choose the job to your liking then you should do so. If the choices are few and this job is a good one under the circumstances then you could tolerate it for some time and later switch to something that interests you. But that would be possible only if you know what you want and like doing. Career counselling will help you know your choices and make a plan. K.D. Q. I am a 20-year-old pursuing my B.Tech. in Computer Science.

During the recent campus recruitment in our college, I got placed in one of the companies and I was the first girl with a job offer in our college. But I am not interested in joining the company for my own reasons and to add to it, I am not allowed to appear for the rest of the recruitment procedures in the campus as per our college rules. I am now totally confused and clueless about what I should plan next. I thought of getting my post-graduation done once I am done with my UG programme as my father thinks it might be helpful to find a job as a lecturer. But I am attracted to MBA programmes as well but the fear of not qualifying in the respective exams keeps me away from preparing for the same. At times I even think of preparing for UPSC exams.

I am very confused. Please guide me. Ans. While choosing a career, it is important to understand your interests, aptitude and personality traits that would suit the best possible option. Are you inclined towards teaching or more inclined towards practical work and management? It requires an understanding of your future dreams as well as your aptitude and interests. You need to introspect and take time to decide. Do not rush into it.

A session will help you find clarity. D. Q. I am a student of second year MBBS. I have a lot of competition in studies with my friends. During my first year, I was very good and attentive in my lectures and I used to get highest marks in the exam. But at the time of my final exam, my mom was critically ill. My performance in the exam dropped down and my friends stood first and second in the class. Now my mother is fine but my confidence level is very low and I am not be able to concentrate in my studies and in class.

I feel very low in front of them. Please help me. Ans. Difficult situations can affect any one and your situation when your mother fell ill has affected your results. That was not your fault but fate. It happens to all of us. Many things are not in our control and we suffer the consequences. But it has nothing to tell about your talents and abilities. Your intelligence and discipline remain with you forever. Making comparisons with others will only lead to disappointment. Now that your mother is better, bring your focus to the present from the past and work towards your goal. Best of luck! ■
