Traffic Police move comes in backdrop
of rising mishaps involving rashly-driven heavy vehicles where 457 persons lost their lives, and 563 were injured in 422 mishaps involving trucks during last five years
With an aim to bring down casualties in road mishaps, Nagpur City Police has banned entry of heavy vehicles, particularly trucks, in the city limits. A notification issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Nagpur City, Lohit Matani, mentioned that trucks would now have to move through outer Ring Road only. The same is necessary as police said in last five-years about 457 citizens lost their lives on city roads after being involved in mishaps involving trucks. The notification comes into effect from September 8 and remains in force till October 10, 2025.
The data collated by Nagpur City Police from 2020 to 2025 mentions that about 422 road mishaps occurred on internal roads of city.
This was due to the involvement of rashly driven heavy vehicles, mostly goods-laden trucks. Apart from the casualty, about 563 people suffered serious injuries leading to permanent disability. Besides due to involvement of trucks about 180 minor mishaps also occurred in which 247 persons suffered injuries.
Therefore, police bosses said, time has come to ban the movement of truck through busy city streets. Further with the Outer Ring Road is now complete, the trucks can easily skip the city and use the by-passes to move onto their destination in all four directions of the country with ease.
The total ban on movement of heavy vehicles would also cover truck, trailers and tankers involved in ferrying construction material, like sand, crushed stones and even ready mix cement. However in case required, DCP, Traffic Branch, can consider providing necessary permission on case to case basis.
MIDC: Taking into consideration the need of industries located in MIDC, Hingna, the city police has provided some relaxation. The trucks coming from Amravati Road can take the right turn at Hotel Rahul and onto the Central MIDC Road. However their entry will remain regulated from 6 am to 10 pm, during the peak traffic hours in city. Means these truck can come in only during the night hours.
For the truck coming from Bhopal, Betul and Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh), the available road will be from Koradi Power House towards Outer Ring Road
and from there to Gondkhairi T-point and then to Wadi T-point and ahead towards MIDC. Also in case of heavy vehicles coming from Jabalpur and Bhandara, the route marked by Traffic Branch is that they would need to move onto Kapsi overbridge and then to Jamtha fly-over, Zero Circle, and then to Gondhkhairi T-point on Amravati Road and ahead.
Trucks entry at
Govt goods godown post 10 pm
The restriction on movement of heavy vehicles would also cover the truck plying off from Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns at Ajni. They too are allowed to move from Ajni to Civil Lines godown of Food and Civil Supplies from 10 pm to 6 am time. During the day and evening time their movement remains banned.
Further the police have also given the route in city on which they can ply. For the trucks coming from Amravati side would have to move through Outer Ring Road and from Mauli cutting come onto Chinchbhuvan stop to reach Ajni Square and ahead to FCI godown.
The restrictions on entry of heavy vehicles is also going to cover the traffic coming to MIHAN, Container Depot at Ajni (Inner Ring Road), to Goods Shed at Nagpur Railway Station (Cotton Market), Wholesale Market in Gandhibagh, Itwari.
Gandhibagh: The notification mentioned that heavy restrictions would be placed on movement of trucks at Gandhibagh, and at a time only five heavy vehicles will be allowed for loading or unloading operations. Further they would be covered by speed restrictions, 30 km/hr.
Concession for trucks to reach RTO units, for those on Govt. duty
While drafting the notification the city police have taken into consideration the working of Regional Transport Office (RTO) and mentioned that truck and heavy vehicles can ply during the day time, 6 am to 10 pm but earmarked route for each of the three offices. To reach RTO unit on Amravati Road, the entry would be from Gondkhairi T-point to Amravati Road, Wadi T-point, Law College Square and ahead.
To reach RTO, Nagpur Rural, Kamptee Road (Lal Godam), the route marked is from Khairi village road and then to left onto Bhilgaon Octroi post no. 2 and then to Automotive Square, Kapil Nagar Square, Tathagat Square and left turn towards Patankar Square and ahead.
For reaching RTO, East Nagpur office, Kalamna, the trucks would have to move through Khairi village road, and onto Kamptee Road after taking left turn and onto Bhilgaon Octroi post no. 2, then to Automotive Square and onto Kalamna fly-over till Chikhli Square or from Pardi Square Octroi post to Chikhli Road.
The police have also clarified that heavy vehicle on duty of Government offices, namely NMC, NIT, NMRDA, Zilla Parishad and other government undertakings, the fire brigade, Defence services, police, can move without any restrictions.
Vehicles carrying essential goods exempted from ban
Similarly, city police have provided exemption to heavy vehicles involved in movement of essential goods, like LPG cyclinders, milk, petrol/diesel
etc. Barring these vehicles all other trucks would remain banned from plying on road stretches from 6 am to 10 pm on Residency Road; Mount Road; WHC Road; Morris College T-point to Rahate Colony; Sitabuldi Main Road, Malviya Road, Jasitambh Square to Sona Restaurant; Indora Square to Chitnis Park; Old Bhandara Road; Kelibagh Road; Rifle Range Road (Civil Lines) till Ramgiri; DahiBazar RoB (only vehicles engaged in essential goods movement and buses of MSRTC are permitted to ply).
