Gen Z Fast lane to a developed India

By Dr Sameer Manapure :

The article ‘Gen Z(ee): Much ado about narrow bandwidth’ offers an opportunity for reflection on the values, priorities and preparedness of India’s youth. It may also be useful to consider how Gen Z can be gently guided to use its energy and influence more purposefully as India aspires to become a developed nation. One possible starting point lies in moving away from an excessive emphasis on degrees towards the deeper acquisition of knowledge, skills and character. A developed society is sustained not merely by qualifications, but by competence, ethical conduct, discipline and the capacity for independent thought. For the young, learning may be viewed not as a phase, but as a continuing responsibility. There is equal merit in renewing civic consciousness.

Respect for public spaces, adherence to traffic norms, environmental sensitivity and involvement in community activities are simple habits, yet they form the backbone of a mature society. When young citizens engage with immediate surroundings, national progress acquires a firmer foundation. In this context, the extensive time spent on social media deserves thoughtful reconsideration. Unchecked consumption often leads to distraction and loss of productive time. If even a fraction of this engagement is redirected towards civic awareness, dissemination of factual information, promotion of public discipline and encouragement of community participation, social media can become a powerful instrument of nation-building and civic education.

Equally important is the cultivation of a logical and scientific temper. A generation guided by reason, evidence and inquiry is better equipped to question blind beliefs and decisively reject superstition, which continues to impede social progress and rational decision-making. Such an outlook also enables young citizens to oppose corruption, criminality and divisive tendencies in public life, and to support governance rooted in integrity, accountability and social harmony rather than narrow or short-term interests. Innovation and entrepreneurship, too, may find greater purpose when aligned with Indian realities. Addressing challenges in healthcare, agriculture, water management, energy and urban living can yield enduring public benefit while providing meaningful avenues for youthful creativity. Moderation in consumption, respect for public resources and an inclination towards savings contribute to personal stability and national economic strength.

Guidance on values, culture and traditions from the nursery stage, reinforced by the wisdom and lived experiences of older generations, can play a decisive role in shaping Gen Z into smart and patriotic citizens. Early exposure to ethics, respect, discipline builds strong character and emotional balance, while inter-generational learning connects young minds to the nation’s heritage and sacrifices. India’s development is a shared endeavour across generations. and if such guidance is met with reflection, restraint and responsibility, the fast lane chosen by Gen Z will lead to lasting national progress. The habits young citizens practice will determine whether national development remains a slogan or becomes a lived reality.
