The much-loved Vanbala toy train at Seminary Hills, a major attraction for children and families, is likely to restart within the next three months. The assurance was given by the Forest Department to the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court during a hearing on Wednesday.
The High Court raised concerns that children today are increasingly spending time on mobile phones and television, and asked whether the Vanbala toy train could be developed as a “world-class” attraction to encourage outdoor recreation. The court suggested that parents would bring their children to enjoy the train on weekends and holidays if the facility improved.
After the court’s questions, the Forest Department informed the bench that efforts are underway to restart the Vanbala train within three months.
Taking note of this assurance, Justices Anil Kilor and Raj Wakode directed the department to submit an affidavit within a week.
The court has also asked the Forest Department to explore whether the Vanbala train can be upgraded to become one of the best toy trains in the country, or even in the world. The Vanbala toy train, located in the regional forest area of Seminary Hills, is considered a pride of Nagpur and has been a source of joy for children for decades. However, it has remained non-operational due to repeated technical issues.
Taking suo motu cognizance of a news published in The Hitavada City Line, the High Court had registered a public interest litigation on its own and began monitoring the issue. During an earlier hearing, the court had sought clarity on when the train would be restarted.
The train was restarted with much enthusiasm in December 2023 at the Balodyan area after a gap of seven years. However, within two years, operations had to be stopped again due to wear and tear of the old tracks and frequent technical faults.
Officials have stated that the existing tracks are no longer safe and require major repairs or replacement.
Nagpur Regional Deputy Conservator of Forests, Dr Vinita Vyas, informed the court that the department plans to conduct a joint inspection with Central Railway. If track replacement is required, it will be done with the support of Central Railway as soon as possible. Advocate Deepak Thakre represented the Government.
