Bhushan Shingne, BJP candidate from Prabhag No 11 and former corporator, was brutally attacked by a group of people in the Gorewada area around Wednesday midnight. Shingne sustained serious injuries to his hands, face and legs and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The incident has created a major political stir in the city. According to information, Shingne went to the spot along with two BJP party workers. As soon as he reached the area, around 12 people led by Ganesh Chacherkar and others who were already present there allegedly launched a violent attack on Shingne and his associates.

Chacherkar’s wife Manju Chacherkar is Congress candidate from Prabhag 11 A. During the assault, one of Shingne’s colleagues fell to the ground. When Shingne bent down to help him, the attackers pushed him down and started pelting stones at him. He was hit on the face with a stone, and when he tried to protect himself, his hands were also hit repeatedly. His lips were badly injured and blood started gushing out. He was also beaten on his legs, resulting in fractures. Shingne was first taken to Mayo Hospital, where X-rays confirmed fractures on his hands and legs.

Later, he was shifted to a private hospital for further treatment. Doctors said, his condition is stable but he will need time to recover. BJP City President Dayashankar Tiwari alleged that Congress candidate Chacherkar and some Congress workers were involved in the attack. “The attack was so brutal that it appeared the attackers wanted to kill Bhushan Shingne,” Tiwari said. He added that he has demanded immediate and strict action from the Police Commissioner and has also informed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis about the incident.

Confirming the police action, DCP Zone I Nityanand Jha said, “Gittikhadan police have registered a case of attempt to murder, rioting and criminal intimidation. A detailed investigation has been launched to identify and arrest all the accused involved in the attack.” A senior police officer from Gittikhadan Police Station said, “We are recording statements of witnesses and scanning CCTV footage from the area. Special teams have been formed, and no accused will be spared.”
