THE India Meteorological
Department (IMD) celebrated
its 151st foundation day on
Thursday with a special exhibition at the local weather department office in Anand Nagar. The
programme aimed at spreading
awareness about weather science and familiarising students
and the general public with the
process of weather calculation
and forecasting. On the occasion, meteorologists interacted
with visitors and explained in
simple terms how weather data
is collected and analysed. Incharge of the Meteorological
Observatory, Devendra Kumar
Tiwari said a series of activities
were organised to mark the
department’s 151 years of service.
The office premises were
cleaned and decorated and
department officials, staff members and their families participated in the celebrations.
An exhibition was conducted
displaying various instruments
used in meteorological observations. Experts demonstrated how
weather related data such as temperature, air pressure, wind direction and humidity is recorded
using specialised equipment.
Visitors were also given information about radio sound systems, radio waves and temperature requirements for aircraft
operations.
A live demonstration was conducted by releasing an air balloon fitted with instruments to
measure atmospheric pressure
and upper-air conditions.
Meteorologists also explained
key weather phenomena including western disturbances,
cyclones, low-pressure systems,
unseasonal rainfall and formation of the southwest monsoon.
The process of preparing weather forecasts was explained in
detail, drawing keen interest from
students.

and a large number of students
and citizens were present on the
occasion.
