Prof C G Raghavan, a distinguished legal academic and an eminent member of Nagpur’s legal education fraternity, passed away on Thursday at Hyderabad. He was 91. Born on April 19, 1935, he devoted his life to the pursuit of legal scholarship, teaching, and public service.
Prof Raghavan served with distinction as Professor of Law at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College, Nagpur. Over the course of his illustrious career, he held several important academic and administrative positions, including University Professor and Head of the Post Graduate Department of Law, Nagpur University.
He was an Ex-Officio Member of
the Nagpur University Senate and Academic Council, Former Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Chairman of the Board of Studies in Law, Nagpur University.
Prof Raghavan was frequently invited to deliver prestigious lectures at national law institutions across India. His participation in established lecture series, including those at Dr Ambedkar Government Law College and other leading institutions.
Beyond university teaching, Prof Raghavan contributed significantly to public policy and institutional governance.
He served as an Ex-Member of the High Power Committee, Department of Company Affairs, Government of India, Ministry of Law and Corporate Affairs; Ex-Member of the Expert Committee of UNICEF on Child Rights; Ex-Member of the Governing Council of the National Law School, Bhopal; and as Visiting Professor at Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, from 1993 to 2004.
His association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Nagpur, further demonstrated his commitment to education, culture, and public intellectual life. Prof Raghavan was widely regarded as a visionary scholar with deep knowledge of the sacred epics, Ramayan and Mahabharat, which he often cited to enrich his lectures and discussions. Through decades of dedicated teaching and mentorship, Prof C G Raghavan shaped and inspired generations of law students.
