Congress falters despite improved performance

Despite moderate voter turn out, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stormed back to power in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), in an unprecedented fourth straight term by bagging 102 seats. Congress party’s hopes of cashing in disenchantment among voters against BJP failed to make a mark with the voters. Though Congress improved upon its performance in the NMC election compared to last one, in the end however it got steamrolled by the BJP. Congress ended up with 34 seats. The 4-member Prabhag system became a turning point for Congress, which now needs to seriously introspect on its leadership model in the city and completely overhaul the organisation. BJP’s ally Shiv Sena (Shinde) bagged one seat from the seven it contested.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) made spectacular debut in NMC, as not only did they open their account, but bagged 6 and 4 seats respectively in the very first attempt. This indicates polarisation of the votes and despite Congress fielding candidates from minority community in record number, the same could not provide any returns in number of seats for the party. Shiv Sena (UBT) retained its base by winning two seats, a repeat of last time’s performance. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (Shinde) managed to get one seat on debut.

‘BJP has won this election on Vikas ka agenda’

“This election was won by the Vikas ka agenda put forward by the BJP” announced Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday, calling upon party workers and newly-elected corporators to honour the public mandate by working tirelessly for the city’s progress. He said, “Nagpur’s trust must be justified in every action we take.” Speaking at the victory celebration organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Mahal on Friday to celebrate the unprecedented victory in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), he said citizens had voted in overwhelming numbers because they had personally witnessed the city’s transformation. Fadnavis noted that the development visible across Nagpur was the outcome of the “visionary leadership” of Union Minister
