2017 nmc election prabhag no 24

PRABHAG No 24, which is situated in East Nagpur, is once again going to be a major political platform for every party, as this constituency witnessed a close battle in the 2017 civic election. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections return after a long gap of almost nine years and Prabhag No 24 will give a tough battle mainly for major parties -- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena and Indian National Congress (INC) this time. The delay in civic elections has increased public expectations, as residents hope that fresh representatives will finally address long-pending basic issues. As the Prabhag No 24 consists of different communities residing since many years, the Muslim vote bank will be a game changer for all political parties. All these factors have turned the Prabhag 24 into one of the most closely watched wards in the upcoming civic polls.

 BJP’s clean sweep in 2017

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won all the four seats from Prabhag No 24 in the 2017 polls. However, it was not an easy task for BJP in the 2017 polls as the party faced tough fight in all four seats from Shiv Sena and Indian National Congress. Anil Saukhilal Gendre of BJP won the 24A seat in the 2027 elections with 9,957 votes. Whereas, 24B seat was won by Sarita Ishwar Kaware of BJP with 11,117 votes, 24C was won by Chetna Raju Tank of BJP by 10,333 votes, and 24D seat was won by Pradeep Vasantrao Pohane of BJP by securing 9,764 votes. However, the sitting MLA Krishna Khopde has a strong base. His presence helps the party maintain balance and renew confidence among workers to challenge Shiv Sena and Congress again.

Civic problems still unsolved

The Prabhag continues to struggle with basic civic problems like sanitation, clean air, traffic and good roads. Residents complain that development has been uneven and largely limited to selected areas. Internal roads in peripheral localities remain in poor condition, with potholes and incomplete cement or asphalt work. Drainage is another major concern. As the Prabhag, is situated close to Naag river, poor drainage system despite drainage line is a problem. During monsoon, the low-lying areas like Dipti Signal witness water-logging every year. In several layouts, proper drainage systems still need maintenance. Sanitation issues are also serious, with open plots turning into garbage dumping grounds. Also, the residents complain of absence of playgrounds, gardens and recreational areas for the kids and elderly. The Bhandewadi dumping yard near the Prabhag is a major contributor of air pollution as it releases smoke in the atmosphere when ever a fire breaksout and gives out foul spell during the rainy season. The nearby residents are the worst victims of this issue. Political parties will have to address all these issues in the upcoming election and those parties who will include these issues in their manifesto will be definitely benefited.

Composition of voters

The population density is very high in Prabhag No 24, as it has 61,732 total population. Despite high density, it has 12,052 the Schedule Cast population and 2,846 Schedule Tribe population, respectively. The Prabhag has a large number of SC, ST and Muslim population, which always plays an important role in local politics. Apart from this, the Prabhag is home to OBC communities, and a good number of North Indians.
