Prabhag No 25, which is situated in East Nagpur, is once again going to be a major political platform for every party, as this constituency witnessed a close call in the previous 2017 civic election.
This year, the Prabhag will witness a tough battle mainly between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress. Residents are hopeful that the long standing civic problems will be resolved by fresh representatives. The Prabhag consists of residents of different faith and communities. This will be a challenge for all political parties.
BJP dominated in 2017 polls
In the 2017 NMC polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recorded three corporation seats whereas one seat was captured by Congress. However, it was not an easy task for BJP in last elections as the party faced tough fight in all four seats from Congress. Puroshottam Nagorav Hajare of Congress was victorious in 2017 elections as he drubbed BJP’s Devendra Mahadeo Mehar by just 893 votes for Prabhag No 25B seat.
Whereas, remaining three seats 25A, 25C and 25D were won by BJP. Jayshree Yogeshwar Rarokar of BJP won the 25A seat, Vaishali Devchand Rohankar of BJP won the 25C seat, whereas 25DDipak Motiram Vadibhasme of BJP won the 25D seat.
However, the current MLA from North Nagpur is senior BJP leader Krishna Khopde, who has a strong base in the area. His presence has altered the balance and given the BJP renewed confidence to challenge the Congress once again.
Mixed social composition of voters
The population density is very high in Prabhag No 25, as it has 66,076 total population. Despite high density, it has 8,652 the Schedule Caste population and is 4,249 Schedule Tribe population. The Prabhag has a large number of OBC, Brahmin, Marwadi, Gujarati, and Muslim population who play a key role in local politics.
Major civic issues
the Prabhag continues to struggle with basic civic problems like foul smell and stench in rainyseason from Bhandewadi Dumping Yard, inadequate water supply, sanitation, clean air, clean water and good roads. Residents complain that development has been uneven and largely limited to selected areas. Many internal roads are in poor condition. Erratic water supply is another major concern. Some part of the Prabhag gets drinking water through tankers. As majority of the area is close to Pili river, water-logging is an annual headache for the residents. Lack of proper drainage, poor water supply systems, sanitation and neglected public gardens are the other issues which need immediate focus. Bhandewadi dumping yard is a major contributor to air pollution in the Prabhag. .
