Accused in POCSO case, teenager hangs self in police custody

A teenager accused in the POCSO case died in the custody of Jaripatka Police, sending City Police machinery in a tizzy. The teen hailed from Uttar Pradesh and is identified as Manojkumar Ramji Bhatia. He was found hanging from the ceiling in the lock-up of police station during morning on Thursday, it is learnt. The incident sent shock waves in the administration that swung into action and reported the matter to CID as per the standard protocol. As the death occurred in the police custody, magisterial inquiry will be held. Bhatia hailed from Madaripura locality of Handya village in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh and was arrested by Jaripatka Police on charges of kidnapping. Jaripatka Police had booked Manojkumar after he eloped with a local girl, a native of UP, a few days back. He was in city for higher education when Manojkumar came in contact with the girl. The offence under POCSO was registered on January 19 and the Jaripatka Police traced the accused and the minor girl with whom he eloped to UP. The two were picked up and brought to city. The girl was returned to the custody of parents. Manojkumar was remanded to two days of police custody and same was ending on Thursday. Police surmise that sometime during wee hours, the teenager might have committed the act. The teen used the bedsheet that he tied to the lock-up window to hang himself, perhaps overcoming with shock at having to face police wrath. The incident came to notice early on Thursday morning leaving police personnel shocked. Senior officers were apprised about the issue. Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy, Additional Commissioner of Police, North Region, Rajendra Dabhade, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-VI, Sandip Pakhale, reached the po1lice station to review the situation. Later, the CID team on reaching the police station carried out the routine procedure and sent the body for post mortem to Mayo Hospital.
