Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Central Jail, Jabalpur, has introduced a poignant and socially significant tableau titled ‘Gudiya’ to be displayed during main celebration of Republic Day in the district. The tableau is designed and constructed by the inmates themselves, serving a powerful commentary on the evolution of the Indian penal system, transitioning from a history of retribution to a contemporary focus on rehabilitation and humanitarian care. The narrative follows a young protagonist, Gudiya, representing many children under the age of six who reside within correctional facilities alongside their parents (mother).

The tableau illustrates the stark contrast between the restrictive environments of the part and the modern days’ supportive infrastructure provided under the Madhya Pradesh government’s reformative mandate. The tableau showcases the improvements in these children’s lives due to the Madhya Pradesh government’s reformative policies, including access to schooling, play areas (creches), Anganwadis, nutritious food and vaccinations. Beyond child welfare, the “Gudiya” tableau addresses broader societal themes. It also supports the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign, advocating for the elimination of gender discrimination. The presentation also incorporates a display of strength and progress through a performance by female commandos, emphasizing the role of women in modern security and governance.
