BJP’s upper hand

In the 2017 Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections, the Prabhag witnessed a high-stakes, multi-cornered battle that reflected a significant shift in the local political landscape. Similar to the broader city-wide trend, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) established a firm presence in this ward by securing three out of the four seats. The results highlighted a ‘fragmented mandate’ where, although the BJP emerged as dominant force, Congress and Independent grassroots connections remained resilient. This historical background is essential for the 2025 election, as the new ward formation now covers a population of 66,828 and continues to be a pivotal electoral ground for both major national parties.

Mixed social composition

The Prabhag is a vibrant mix of established layouts and diverse communities. The ward supports a population of 66,828. There is a significant Scheduled Caste (SC) presence with 7,473 residents. It also includes an Scheduled Tribes (ST) population of 3,277. The Prabhag is also home to Muslim, Sindhi, Gujarati, Marathi communities.

Civic challenges

While the Prabhag is a hub of residential and educational activity, the daily experience of its residents is marred by several systemic civic failures that have become central themes in the lead-up to the elections. Massive influx of students and patients near the Ayurvedic College and KDK College creates severe traffic paralysis at Jagnade Square and Sakkardara Square. Lack of a modern traffic management system at these junctions leads to daily bottlenecks during peak hours. High-traffic corridors, particularly the stretch leading to Shitla Mata Mandir Chowk and Bhande Plot, are frequently reported to have hazardous pits and uneven surfaces. These road defects pose a significant risk to two-wheeler riders and contribute to vehicle wear and tear. Areas situated near the Naag river, such as Nehru Nagar and the vicinity of Keshav Nagar Vidyalaya, face threat of poor drainage during heavy monsoons. Stagnant water in low-lying pits often leads to sanitation concerns for the local residents.
